Cons: The compact nature of this water flosser means you might have to refill the tank more than once to completely clean your mouth. Waterpik ION Professional: The Ion is sleek, compact, and easy to use, but we weren't as impressed with its quality. The nozzle attachment fell off mid-use, and our tester struggled to reassemble it correctly. The ION’s compact design also helps make it easy to place. It isn’t nearly as tall or wide as many of the countertop water flossers we tested, but even with a smaller footprint, it doesn’t sacrifice reservoir size and can hold a generous 600mL of water, which is among the largest we tested. The other countertop water flossers we tested had reservoirs that ranged from 400mL to 600mL. With the large tank size, it’s enough water to floss at any pressure setting without having to refill. The compact design also gives it a cleaner look on the countertop.

Cons: Even with a larger tank on this handheld water flosser, it may need to be refilled to completely clean your mouth. The soft mode is still pretty powerful and may be uncomfortable for sensitive users. Lukewarm water can help solve this issue. This product is ideal for those people who had braces on or other dental devices. If you’re worrying that it costs too much, you might be surprised that this product is budget-friendly. Budget-friendly and clinical proven device that can help you maintain your bright smile and boost your confidence in facing people in work, school, or even in public. This Waterpik cordless model does a supremely thorough job of cleaning between the gums and ridding them of unwanted bacteria. While it’s a fairly chunky beast to wrap your mitts around, refilling and charging the thing is easy enough – with a top-up from the tap delivering about 45 seconds of flossing time. Also included is a rechargeable battery, along with a handy array of four tips for interdental cleaning, including an orthodontic tip for braces should you be embracing the Invisalign life right now. Other tips include a standard jet tip for everyday use, along with a plaque-seeker tip for targeting pesky areas. There's even a tongue-cleaner tip if you're really after a thorough, full-mouth clean. No, waterpiks and water flossers cannot damage the teeth or the gums, per Dr. Bishop, since water alone can't damage the structure of your tooth. They can cause mild irritation at first, but that's often normal.Water flossers aren’t considered an essential dental tool, meaning they’re not designed to replace your toothbrush or even conventional floss. But they can make the process of cleaning your teeth easier, especially if you have dental appliances, dexterity issues or a serious aversion to flossing the traditional way. In addition to the standard nozzle, the Philips Sonicare Power Flosser 7000 comes with a comfort nozzle and quad stream nozzle — both with soft rubber tips, which gave a gentle feel along the gums and were completely different than any other nozzles we tested. The comfort nozzle is otherwise like a traditional jet tip, while the quad stream nozzle has an X-shaped opening, so the stream covers a larger surface area. In your mouth, it feels as though four jets are cleaning your teeth at once. While we can’t confidently say that this in fact cleaned our teeth any better, we could feel the increase in coverage along our teeth and gums, and we truly preferred the experience over the regular jet tip. Many water flosser brands claim that water flossing “removes up to 99.9% of plaque from treated areas.” Waterpik points to a large number of studies supporting the claim water flossing is more effective than traditional methods, including one that suggests water flossing is significantly better than string flossing for plaque removal and an improvement over interdental brushes with regard to overall gingival health. Philips has publicized research suggesting the same, including a study demonstrating similar results with regard to plaque removal. A team at BioSci Research Canada has found evidence that when combined with a manual toothbrush, a water flosser is significantly more effective than string floss in removing plaque from tooth surfaces (this study was performed with a Waterpik water flosser). The Philips Sonicare Power Flosser 7000 System is expensive, but it truly has it all — though perhaps more than you need in one device. If you are looking for a corded countertop flosser with all of the bells and whistles and don’t already have an electric toothbrush you like, it might be worth looking into, but otherwise you might end up paying for more than what you actually need. Ease of Use and Settings: We set up each device, filled the tanks with water according to the manufacturer's instructions, and evaluated the different tips and pressure settings, familiarizing ourselves with how it maneuvers around our teeth.

Pros: Add some fun to your dental hygiene routine with this colorful water flosser. It has three pressure modes for a comfortable clean and comes with five nozzles. Choose between normal, soft, and pulsing for a comfortable experience. Each nozzle head can rotate to clean hard-to-reach places in your mouth, and the set even includes a tongue cleaner. This water flosser comes with a bag to keep everything in while traveling. The water tank is 250 milliliters, which should hold enough water to clean your entire mouth before having to refill it. It also has a two-minute timer to help you avoid overuse. A full charge on this water flosser can last for 30 days. For starters, the base houses both a water flosser and an electric toothbrush charger. This allows you to keep all of your oral hygiene needs in one space, with the combined design taking up less counter space. It also uses just one outlet, which could be beneficial for some. However, if you don’t need the toothbrush component, there’s also the Philips Sonicare Power Flosser 3000, a stand-alone water flosser with the exact same features.

That said, there are some pros and cons to keep in mind before settling on a large reservoir. While larger reservoirs mean you can use the water flosser longer each session and don't need to refill it daily, larger tanks typically aren't cordless and therefore take up more space on your counter or sink. After squirting water in our mouth an excessive amount of times, we examined every feature and assessed each water flosser in the following categories. Waterpik Cordless Express: This is a powerful flosser that's nearly ready to use out of the box. It has two settings, which would work fine for someone who needs a lot of intensity—our testers noted that the lowest setting is still pretty strong. Aside from preventing oral diseases, the additional benefit of using Aquasonic Aqua Flosser is it massages the gums by boosting circulation.

We analyzed how each water flosser is charged — whether it needs to be plugged in while in use or cordless powered by batteries or a rechargeable option. It depends on your oral care needs. If you don't have issues with your teeth and gums, wear oral appliances, or struggle to use traditional string floss, a water flosser might be a luxury addition to your oral care routine. (Not to say it couldn't be worth it, just that you might not get as much use out of it.) But if preventing and removing more than the average amount of plaque is critical to your health, we think a water flosser is a solid investment. But if you’re looking for a two-in-one contraption, the flosser offers two different toothbrush heads (one compact, one full-size), a 30-second pulsar, a 400mL water tank and a three-year warranty.
